Sun-Dried Goji Berries Information

Due to the goji berry’s extraordinary nutrient value, rich-red colour, and pleasant full-bodied taste, the Chinese, Mongolian, and Tibetan peoples have been growing the alkaline goji berry plant for an estimated 5000 years.

Chinese medicine knows the goji berry to harmonise and increase the jing energy or the adrenals and kidneys, resulting in enhanced stamina, strength, longevity, and sexual energy. Overall, goji berries have a combination of therapeutic actions on the human body, as they invigorate and strengthen the system whilst helping the body to deal more easily with stress (by supporting the adrenal glands), boost immune function, increase alkalinity and vitality, provide liver protection, improve eyesight and blood quality, deliver anti-ageing compounds, and process a number of additional outstanding qualities.

Macrobiotic nutritionist Michio Kushi used to say, “Eat according to your purpose”. If part of your purpose is longevity and vitality, then the goji berry is the superfood for you! Evidence from every direction indicates that the goji berry is the leading longevity superfood in the world, even earning the nickname “the longevity fruit”.

So perhaps the most nutritionally rich berry fruit on the planet and well balanced for nearly all body types, blood types, and metabolisms; a complete protein source, containing nineteen different amino acids and all eight essential amino acids; provider of twenty one or more trace minerals – the main ones being zinc, iron, copper, calcium, germanium, selenium, and phosphorous; not forgetting the vitamins B1, B2, B6, and vitamin E. Contrary to internet marketing claims, the goji berry is NOT a rich source of vitamin C.

When it comes to antioxidants, goji berries are nature’s richest source of antioxidant carotenoids with 2-4 times the amount of antioxidants as blueberries, containing more beta-carotene than carrots, as well as the two key antioxidants for vision- zeaxanthin and lutein.

Harvesting Information

Although the goji berries I source have not been certified as organic, they are grown and farmed in an isolated and environmentally pristine location, where there is no risk of contamination from agricultural pollution. The supplier’s plantation is on the banks of the Yellow River in China, where the rich soil provides all of the water and nutrients needed by the growing goji trees. Around 3000 trees are planted per hectare, and the evergreen shrubs are encouraged to grow lengthways (similarly to a vine) and stand around 1 metre high, which makes it easier to harvest the ripe berries.

Each tree can produce around 1kg of berries, which are harvested between June and November of each year. A single berry picker will collect on average 30kg of fresh goji berries in a day, the harvested berries are then carefully cleaned and laid out to dry under the sun. Once fully dry the goji berries resemble small red raisins, and can be safely stored without the need for preservatives for over a year, retaining their characteristic colour, taste and array of nutrients.

As the ripe berries are fragile and easily damaged they must be carefully picked by hand, avoiding the sharp thorns of the goji tree. Legend holds that if touched when unripe, the goji berry will oxidise and turn black. The traditional hand picking method is still favoured today over mechanical harvesting.
